Meditations

A01-001: Flying Over Mountains (California)
“Behold, He who forms mountains, and creates the wind…who treads the high places of the earth – the Lord God of hosts is His name.” Amos 4:13

I looked through the window of the plane and saw something magnificent: snow capped mountains! I could just barely see the trees on the mountains. I thought about how great God is. Here I was flying over 30,000 feet looking at the world from an entirely awesome perspective. Here I saw God’s creation in panoramic view. Such beauty and such grandeur. Yet the same God who created the mountains and the wind, created each of us in our own magnificence and beauty. I also thought about how present God is, no matter what our circumstances, large and overwhelming, or small and seemingly insignificant. God’s presence can be seen everywhere. We just need to look around ourselves. We just need to look at ourselves.


A01-002: Daily Sunrise (San Francisco, California)
“Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23

Just in case we should forget about how constant and reliable God is, we only need to look at the regularity of each daily sunrise He blesses us with. God wants us to grow in our trust in Him. Every day we have an opportunity to come into the presence of God and thank Him for His great faithfulness. We can trust God completely. He reminds us of this every day.


A01-003 Rose in Garden (St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, England)
“One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” Psalm 27:4

There is so much to be appreciated when we take the time to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord. Stop for a moment. Breathe. Seek God and come into His presence.

A01-004: Dew on Roses (St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, England)
“Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.” Deuteronomy 32:2

Like rain, God’s Word can be absorbed within us.
Like dew, His Word rests gently upon our hearts.
Like showers on new grass, the Word of God can refresh us.
Like abundant rain, His Word can drench us.
Let God’s Word rain upon you,
And like a well-watered plant you will grow.

A01-005: Pink Rose (St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, England)
“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:7


I have learned through my life experiences that there is nothing I can do without God. God is the source of my strength, the preserver of my health, and the sustainer of my being. Sometimes we need to be reminded that it is God who blesses us. It is God who makes us grow.

A01-006: Waves (Eastern Shore, Maryland)
“Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” Psalm 107:28-29

Sometimes the waves of life beat against us and we feel overwhelmed, distressed, and fearful. But we don’t have to face our circumstances alone. Help is immediately available. All we need to do is cry out to the Lord. I know that often when we are going through our difficulties it’s hard to know how to ask for help. But really there is so much power just in the name of God that that is all we need to do. Once, when I was going through a tough time, all I could do was shout out loud, “God help me!” Just as God has the power to still the storms to a whisper, and the power to hush the roaring waves, He has the power to bring you out of your distress. Call on Him. Trust in Him.

A01-007: Winter River Bank (West Virginia)
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.” Psalm 46:4-5

As I stood above the river on a cold winter day, I was reminded of how much our lives sometimes look as gloomy as that day. The overcast skies looked hopeless, and the leaf-less trees looked barren. But in the middle of it all was the river. The river – a life force vigorously moving onward in the midst of apparent bleakness. God is our life force. In spite of how bad things look, God is moving in your midst. God will help you at break of day.

A01-008: Fountain (Washington, D.C.)
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John 7:37-38

We all need water to live. Just as a plant left un-watered will die, in the same way we cannot be spiritually sustained without drinking from God’s fountain of living water. We have an open invitation to come and drink from streams of living water. Seek God for your spiritual sustenance by quenching your thirst as you meditate on His Holy Word.

A01-009: Canyon Terrain (St. George, Utah)
“I lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2

We are never alone. God is always available to help us. There are days when it’s hard to remember just how close we are to God, and how much closer He is to us. God wants to help us, and God wants us to call on Him for help. Lift up your eyes and know that your help comes from God.

A01-010: Grass on the Hills (St. George, Utah)
“He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.” Psalm 147:8

God supplies all of our needs. This is a blessed assurance.
